traditional hawaiian wedding gift?
question
My brother is marriying someone who is Hawaiian. she has a son. I thought it would be nice to give a gift to them to welcome them to the family. Is there something traditionally given to welcome someone into the family?
answer
I can't think of a traditional gift, but I bet she would be touched if you presented her with a lei at a special occasion - especially if you were not in Hawaii. A very nice seed or nut or shell lei will last for a long time, can be worn over and over, or displayed as art.
If you do order a lei though, be sure to check with whomever you are ordering it through that it is intended for a woman. There are some that are traditionally worn by men.
