Inter-island Flights - Island Hopping questions

This is by far the most common question I answer -- I can't wait till the Hawaii Superferry is in action so I can answer it differetnly.

question
(I sold an extra Hawaii Entertainment Book on Ebay and got this question from the winner)

Since we saw you are shipping from HI, we thought perhaps you may be able to answer some questions we have:

1. What is one of the best and most economical methods of 'island hopping'? (to visit each island for a day going from Honolulu?

2. Please provide a name of a transportation company which is reliable and economical by means of air or sea.

Thank you very much.

answer
Hi. Your only option is to fly to get to the other islands. You can use one of the major carriers - Aloha Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines or you can see is Pacific Wings has a smaller and cheaper flight to where you want to go.

There are ferries to Lanai and Molokai from Maui, but not to any of the other islands - not yet.

followup
You are most kind and informative. Thank you so much. In other words, there are no ferries from Honolulu to other cities/towns on other other islands?

Is there an 'island hopper' ticket available to travel to each island over a period of a week or two?

Thank you again.

followup answer
Correct - no ferries from Honolulu to any other islands, although there may be in a year or so - but none now.

There also is no such thing as an island hopper ticket. There used to be but the airlines have done away with it. Best bet for lowest fares is book early and online. I think the lowest price you can get is currently $74 ONE WAY, although sales sometimes reduce this to $69 and I once saw a first flight of the day special around $35, but it didn't last long.

and another question later that day on same topic
question
My friend and I will be in Oahu and would like to travel to Kauai for a few days to meet up with some other friends. What is the least expensive way to get from Oahu to Kauai? Hawaiian Airlines lists tickets for $165 RT. Do you know of any specials? Can we take a boat for less money?

Thanks for any insight! Have a great day!

answer
there are no boats from Oahu to Kauai. There may be a ferry in a year or so, but there is nothing now. If you book online and early you may get something a little cheaper but only by a few dollars. I do not know of any specials. Sorry. I know, inter-island flights are expensive.

Hi Lisa, My family is traveling to Kauai in March. We would like to go see pearl harbor and the volcano. My children are ages 6, 10 and 14. Which do you think they would like better? I heard you can only see the lava at night. Is this right?

Hi Kathy,

Well, Pearl Harbor is on Oahu, and may be the winner here. Besides the Arizona Memorial, which they may or may not appreciate, there is also a submarine you can enter and the Might Mo, a retired battleship, you can board.

The volcano is on the Big Island. It changes every day. Right now, because the lava is flowing pretty far away from where you can easily drive and walk to, all you may be able to see is a glow and that only at night. There are also helicopter or small plane flyover options and even that may only show these kind of pictures: http://www.hawaii-lisa.com/2006/08/recent-puu-oo-volcano-vent-pictures-at.html

Hi there,
I was just searching for "island hopper" flights myself and came across this:

Flights are $39.00 for one way, it's the best deal I've found so far, and you can go from Island to Island :)
