Ask Hawaii-Lisa a Hawaii Question

I will try to answer most questions related to travel, visiting, or vacations in the Islands. I also sometimes can answer cultural questions but I am not Hawaiian. I don't normally do translations, and I don't normally answer anything that is obviously a homework question. To ask me a question, email me at

Hi there. My friend and I are travelling to Hawaii from Australia from 17-27th March and are keen to catch a sporting match. Do you know of anything major (college or otherwise) that is on and may be of interest? We will be in Honolulu for the first 5 days and then Maui. Many thanks!

Hi Lisa, Just found your blog and it looks great. I am hoping you can help me with some ideas. I am planning on visiting several tropical gardens on different islands and would like some ideas about inter-island travel deals. I remember Aloha Air used to sell inter-island passes for a flat fee. Do any of the airlines, large or small or ferrys offer such a thing anymore? Have they built any long bridges since I have been there last? Any travel or garden recommendations? Thanks for your help.

OK so I read the Island Hopping posts and realize that the inexpensive inter Island thing is just a fantasy at this point, but do you have any suggestions for tropical gardens or museums to check out. Also interested in the Tiki culture, past and present.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Lisa,
My name is Christina Bivone and I am looking to make a big move in my life to Hawaii (big island). Currently I live in New Jersey and I was a first time home buyer, now I am looking to finalize my life in Hawaii and most possibly in Puna. What can you tell me about that area the do's and don'ts do you have any suggestions or any watch out fors.
I heard about the zone 1, 2, and 3. How hard is it to get a bridge loan? These maybe really out there questions but if you have any suggestions or advice to whom I could really trust to talk to please feel free to email me at cb_hallak@yahoo.com.

THank you soooooo much for your time.. :)

On June 9 a woman posted she wanted to elope to hawaii in December. What she wrote is exactly what we want! I do know which island I want though, Maui. I'm reading up on it and everything sounds beautiful. It's like you can't go wrong. I feel like I'm going to just pick something randomly and see what it's like when we get there. Is that right? We really can't go wrong? We're not rich, but we can afford a decent hotel.

Hi Mrs. F. Well, Maui does have a lot of choices. I like Wailea area and Kaanapali area - why don't you give me more info about what exactly you are looking for or pick a hotel and tell me what it is and I'll tell you what I think.

I know the legal drinking age is 21 however is Maui like some other states in the US that allow 18 year olds to drink as long as they are accompanied by their parent?

No, I don't think so. You can ask at the establishment you are in - they would know for sure. I know that if a parent lets a child drink on her own property, the police will not arrest anyone, but on public property, I don't think parent or not matters.

(mickhousemick@yahoo.com) I'm interesting in establishing residency in Hawaii. The first year will be tough for me. Where's the cheapest "Nook and Cranny" I can find on any Island to rent for 1 year? I'd like to work out a 1 year contract wherever it might be. Cheers.

Am planning a vacation to Maui and Kauai, planning in staying in nice, upscale hotel. We would like to stay at a hotel that has the nicest pools; slides, waterfalls, float-up bars, etc....and we were also wondering if there are any resorts that have on-site wading or snorkeling lagoons? Thanks for any help you could give us. Charles

We are cruising from Los Angeles in October. The itinerary has us stopping on Oahu overnight. We wanted to rent a car - do you know of any parking near pier 2?

thank you

Hi, I am planning the vacation for two couples and we are having a difficult time deciding which island to go to. We definitely want to avoid Oahu and are considering Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. We are looking for sandy beaches and small communities of local folk with a few restaurants. Two people really want to go to the Big Island but I have heard that the beaches are few and far between and while we may be up for an adventure 2 or 3 days of the 7 most of our time will be spent on the beach. Is this true? I am nervous that Maui may have more tourists than we are willing to handle (coming from NYC and SF). Any advice would be much appreciated.
